about

The band Topaz was active from the late 90s until around 2005 and featured Andy Laster on saxophone, Stomu Takeishi on electric bass, Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, and me on cello. It was a pleasure re-listening to the excellent playing done on this, our first CD. Produced by Mike Landy who 'discovered' us while walking with his wife in lower Manhattan and past a gig Topaz was playing down on Church Street near Canal. Mike later started his own label named SIAM records and had a vision of how to run a very pro-artist record company but his timing was unfortunately off. It was not a good time for record labels. He closed shop in the early 2000s. Mike was very generous with his time and we made some great music, and I learned a lot about the business as well. Enjoy the track "Verdine," dedicated to the great Earth Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White.
